Local 3583 president Pete Cooper gives a check to the Shelby County PTA president Becca Priddy.  Armed with one very sad and critical statistic – that Tennessee ranks high among the worst states with regard to preventable fire deaths.  Ms. Priddy recognized right away the positive impact such a program could have in Shelby County elementary schools. So she saw to it that SCS would become the state’s first school system to adopt the Buzzly Fire Safety program as part of the curriculum.  Local firefighters and SCS representatives joined together at a press conference at Shelby Farms to introduce the program and give their donations.  Through school level donations, the Buzzly Fire Safety Kit – $1,000 worth of educational materials, including a DVD, workbooks, lesson plans and more – will be first delivered to 10 SCS elementary schools.  The materials, which reinforce fire safety messages through songs, dances, memory exercises and other fun learning activities, can be used at any time during the school year.  Thank you to SCS for piloting this new program.

Bartlett firefighters see and find some strange things when they answer emergency calls. The story of what they found Saturday, July 26 at 2446 East Gemini Cove will be told for years to come. The firefighters responded to a call that smoke was coming from the home. When they arrived at 4:09 p.m. they were forced to make entry when no one answered the door. Efrain Valdez Chamizo, the alleged resident of the home, had apparently forgotten a pan of beans on the stove.  In addition to the pan of  burning beans, the firefighters found a large quantity of pot. As they made their way throughout the home, looking for anyone who may be in distress, they observed marijuana to be growing in almost every room of the residence.

Union members as well as other members of the fire department participated in the annual Dream Factory Buzz the Red, White, and Blue.  This year they raised over $5,000 to help send a young girl to swim with the dolphins.  Thank you for all those who donated and helped raise money.

Team Bartlett/Memphis competed in the Firefighter Combat Challenge in Jackson, MS on  5/17.  The team made it all the way to quarter finals before being eliminated by one of the nations top ranked teams.  Although they did not win, the team has qualified for the Worlds held in Las Vegas.  They would like to thank Local 3583 for there support.  Congratulations.

Local 3583 had seven members show up to run in the 11th Annual St. Valentine's Day 10k and 5k run/walk on Feb. 9, 2008.  Family members also ran to show support for Local 3583 and to promote good physical fitness among members.  Thanks to all those that participated.
